England surge into ISF semi-finals

England boys are through to the semi-finals at the ISF World Schools Gymnasiade in France, while the girls won their group but were knocked out in the quarter-finals.

The girls completed their group with a 7-0 victory over Uganda Erin Green, Samadhi Udamulla and Lauren Loosemore winning two matches each and Udamulla and Loosemore combining to take the doubles.

The squad, completed by Amy Marriott, then progressed to the quarter-finals where they found India too strong and were defeated 4-0. They will now will play off for places 5-8

The boys beat Uganda 7-0 with two wins apiece for Naphong Boonyaprapa, Bertie Kelly and Olly Cornish, with the latter pair winning the doubles. They then beat India 5-2 with Rhys Davies winning two and Boonyaprapa and Cornish winning one each. Davies and Boonyaprapa won the doubles.

In the quarter-finals the boys played North Macedonia and had an impressive 4-0 win as Davies, Boonyaprapa and Kelly took a match each and Cornish came in to partner Kelly in the doubles. The squads are pictured above.

The boys now play the very strong team from Romania in the semi-finals tomorrow. 

More than 3,600 athletes from 69 countries are competing at the event in Deauville, France. It is the largest international multi-sports event for 16-to-18-year-old school students.
