Many respected journalists, including Fabrizio Romano, reported yesterday that the deal had been closed and the clubs were in direct contact over the weekend.
United will pay £ 34m plus add-ons, according to David Ornstein, with payments spread over several years.
According to Romano, the medic will be carried out in the next few days.
Varanes camp is waiting for the quarantine rules and the player is likely to be in Manchester this week.
United has been looking for a high profile partner for Harry Maguire, and Varane is firmly established as one of the best in the business.
Varane is expected to sign a four-year deal with the club's one-year renewal option.
He had a year left on his Madrid contract and had refused to cut his salary, preferring to join United.
Fans will be excited to see the Frenchman wearing the United colors next season.
Varane is joining Jadon Sancho and Tom Heaton as new players this summer and more players could arrive before the transfer window closes.
United will have to sack some players to allow for further purchases, with Paul Pogba most likely to leave the club this summer.
Pogba is closely linked to a move to Paris Saint-Germain and his sale could open the door for United to buy Eduardo Camavinga from Rennes.
